Steven Joseph Bell 71, of Port O'Connor passed away June 27, 2025 surrounded by his family. He was born in Bryan/ College Station on July 25, 1953 to the late L'Roy Bell Sr. and Betty Bell. He graduated from Calhoun High School.
Steve loved the water. At a young age he could be seen sailing his boat in the canal using his mother's sheets as a sail. Later he was known all along the coast for his sailing ability. With his longtime childhood friend Timmy Whitaker, they participated and placed in many regattas. One of Steve and Susie's favorite sailing trips was a 2-month trip from Mexico down to Belize and island hopping to Roatan Honduras. His friend Gary Giesel remembered him as "a small-town crabber, illegal net fisherman who came to develop Shoalwater Boats starting in his pop's garage" in the early 80s. He continued to own and operate Shoalwater/ Bell Boats for over 40 years. Steve was always mechanically inclined. Before he was old enough to drive, his dad jokingly told him he could have an old car if he could get it running. Not long after, he was shocked to hear the car start and take off. The last several years he and Susie enjoyed spending time in their cabin in the mountains of Colorado. Steve will be deeply missed and remembered for his love of family, music and laughter.
He is survived by his partner of 28 years Susan Hudler, brother L'Roy Bell (Liz) sister Shotsie Thumann, nieces Lisa Baumann, Denise Sandy, and Sabrina Bell nephews Matthew White, Brian Thumann and David Bell.
He was proceeded in death by his son Steven (Bubba) Bell, sister Lynne Hearn, nephew Stanley Thumann Jr, great-nephew Robbie Dendy and parents.
Private services will be held by the family.
